All sorcerers are evil. Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything. Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery—magical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains. If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather. She hopes to become a warden, charged with protecting the kingdom from their power.

Then an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire. Elisabeth’s desperate intervention implicates her in the crime, and she is torn from her home to face justice in the capital. With no one to turn to but her sworn enemy, the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn, and his mysterious demonic servant, she finds herself entangled in a centuries-old conspiracy. Not only could the Great Libraries go up in flames, but the world along with them.

As her alliance with Nathaniel grows stronger, Elisabeth starts to question everything she’s been taught—about sorcerers, about the libraries she loves, even about herself. For Elisabeth has a power she has never guessed, and a future she could never have imagined.

note!! this is my first review on the blog after a long ass time and considering I read this book back in, like, October, that's just. Something to keep in mind. Maybe.

{ my review }

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ +++

It has been so, so long since I’ve read a book that makes me feel so damn much.

(Coincidentally, it has also been so long since I’ve finished a book—period.)

Reading Sorcery of Thorns was a ride. In a way that was different from reading Warcross and Wildcard—the gods above know how much I love those two books. But Sorcery. Wow. I just—I can’t seem to find the words for it?

I have never had a book that changed me. I’ve never had a book that meant so much to me that I simply can’t fathom it. I finally do now, though. I finally have this. Sorcery of Thorns was a book full of everything I’ve ever wanted, from its characters to the feelings it gave me. It means the world to me.

NOW, having all that sentimental nonsense out of the way!! Y'ALL. I fucking love his book more than I love lipstick and whew friends, do I love lipstick. It made me cackle in delight, it made me cry, it made me stay up until who knows when, just happy to be reading something so delightful.

See, I haven’t had that feeling in a while. It’s great to have it again, even if it’s only for a few hours.

Man just everything about this book was Great. The writing was beautiful without being overly purple prosey. Without being obnoxious, y'know? The characters leapt off the page and it overwhelms me still, just how much I care about Elisabeth and Nathaniel and Silas. It’s so easy to pretend I have No Feelings Whatsoever, but whew, any mention of him and I’m a goddamn mess and a half. (I’m usually just A Mess regularly, so you see.)

Part of why I adored this novel so much is that Rogerson just wrote evil so well? So nuanced and complex and thoughtful. I’m clearly not the right person to express these thoughts because I’m having so much trouble but— Wow. To see such an abstract word written so breathtakingly well, in such a light that’ll make you think... to put it simply, it’s amazing. And maybe other authors have done this too, maybe other books have the same thing, but this was a first for me and I love it. I love how it ties to inexplicably to my favourite character. I love how she did it—and him—justice.

Anyway I guess I’ll close out on that note. That, and—Nathaniel Thorn is the new fictional Love of My Life. If I were not guyliners in literally every social media account ever, I’d have to change it to accommodate my love for Nathaniel. (ETA: This entire book is dedicated to this book so I think it's close enough l m a o.)

Read this book when it comes out!! It’s splendid and funny and oh, it still makes me weepy. I love it. If that’s enough for you, then by all means! Take heed to my rambling. Cheers!

And if you're for some reason interested, here is a very appropriate thread of the main characters told through painted birds. Y'know, my Brand™.
