This novel was good but it was also a bit confusing. I liked it, but I also felt something was lacking, sadly.

It’s told through two, uh, time views, I guess? A before and after situation. I normally do not like this kind of set up because then there’s two plot points going and basically, it takes twice as long to get to the action, which is what had happened here.

In the “now” sections, it took nearly half the book for the ball to get rolling. For the main character to realise she had to do something completely different for this “life” not to end up like the others. That entire first half, I was uninterested in the “before” chapters because it was basically a set up—her friendship with Ander, Finn showing up, feelings changing, and all that. I was bored with all of it. I wanted to know more about the “life” she was in now, what Grace was going to do to stay and fight.

The second half of the novel was definitely more fun and more engaging! Things had finally started happening and I ended up hooked on both old Grace and this new Grace, along with both their situations. What Bernard here was intriguing—I liked it! Things were changing, a lot of things were changing, and it both made me happy and nervous—happy because woo, my potential ship might be happening, and nervous because oh noooo, the ending is coming and clearly there’s a twist here that won’t make this last.

I wished the characters had a little more… personality to them? Grace’s voice sometimes fell flat and it made connecting with her a bit difficult. I wanted more voice, something that made her stand out, but by the end, nothing like that had happened, which was unfortunate.

This was definitely a unique, if a bit confusing novel. The whole concept of lasting in a new, parallel life (of sorts) for five days before moving to another was totally fresh. I liked the idea, though I never understood how it really happened? … It still confuses me a bit. But I liked it, for the most part.

I also sort of expected to see more of the supposed lives Grace, Ander, and Finn were in, but we’re really stuck in her new one and the first, original one.

Overall, a decent novel and a quick read! It felt a bit slow but the second half made it more engaging! 3 stars.
